Creativity in the age of AI: still powered by people
AI is everywhere right now. From copywriting and image generation to video editing and social media planning, it feels like every day a new tool launches promising faster, smarter, cheaper creativity. Depending on who you ask, AI is either the greatest opportunity we've ever had - or the biggest threat to human creativity since the invention of ClipArt. (We're only half joking.)
At olio creative, we believe it doesn't have to be one or the other. We see AI the way we see any good tool: useful when you need it, but never a replacement for human creativity, care, or connection.
We use AI to support our creative process - streamlining the boring bits, sparking fresh thinking, and helping us work smarter behind the scenes - so that we can spend more time doing what matters: building thoughtful, authentic brands powered by real human insight.
Why AI doesn't replace creativity - it supports it
There’s no denying that AI has changed the creative world. Tasks that once took hours - resizing images, pulling together rough drafts, transcribing interviews - can now be done in minutes. And that’s no bad thing.
At its best, AI doesn't replace the creative process; it supports it. And it can give creatives more time and space to focus on the things that matter most: the strategy behind the campaign, the emotional pull of the story, the spark of a new idea that resonates with real people.
Because no matter how sophisticated AI becomes, creativity isn't just about putting elements together. It's about connection, empathy, originality — all the human things that a machine can’t replicate.
How we use AI at olio creative (and how we don't)
At olio creative, we treat AI the same way we treat any tool - useful when you need it, but never a replacement for creativity or common sense.
We use AI to help brainstorm ideas, whether that's kicking off early-stage campaign concepts, exploring different ways to tell a story, or finding fresh angles we might not have thought of yet. We also lean on AI behind the scenes to help generate code or figure out why a bit of website code isn’t working - making problem-solving faster and smoother. And sometimes, we’ll use it to sense-check our plans: to double-check we’re not missing a key question, a step, or an opportunity before we move forward.
What we don’t do is hand over the creative thinking. We don’t rely on AI for strategy, brand development, storytelling, or design decisions. Those parts will always need a human brain - and a human heart - to get right.
At olio creative, AI is here to support our creativity, not replace it.
Tips for using AI creatively (without losing your soul)
If you're thinking about integrating AI into your creative process, here are a few tips we live by:
Start with strategy, not technology.
Before you even open an AI tool, be clear about your message, your audience, and your goals. No tool — however smart — can tell you what your brand stands for.Always humanise the output.
AI might give you a starting point, but it’s your voice, your ideas, and your personal touch that will make it resonate. Edit, adapt, and add the heart that only a human can bring.Use AI for possibilities, not for final products.
Think of AI as a brainstorming partner. It’s there to offer ideas, variations, and shortcuts - but the final creative choices should always come from you.Stay curious, but stay critical.
Not every new AI tool will be right for your brand or your audience - and that’s okay. Use technology thoughtfully, not just because it’s new or shiny.
Creativity evolves - and that’s a good thing
Technology has always changed the way we create. The printing press revolutionised publishing. Photography changed how we see the world. Digital illustration opened up whole new styles and forms of art. AI is simply the next evolution.
And like every creative tool before it, what matters isn’t the technology itself - it’s how we use it.
We also know that AI, like any major technology, comes with environmental impacts. It’s something we’re aware of, and it shapes the way we choose and use tools - not unlike the way we think about other industries and their footprints. As with most things, we believe thoughtful, responsible use - rather than blanket rejection - is where the real change happens.
At olio creative, we’re excited about the future. We're embracing smart tools like AI where they make sense, but we're also holding tight to the human creativity, collaboration, and heart that no machine can replicate. Because great creative work doesn’t come from faster processes or clever algorithms. It comes from people — their ideas, their stories, their spark… and that’s something AI will never replace.
We’re proud to use new tools where they help - but the soul of every brand we build will always be human.
